Murdoch Madness 2009
Murdoch Madness June 20 2009
For someone who, in their short life as a disc golfer; has been nurtured on the gentle bosom of Rob Hancock memorial; playing on this freezing, rainy, windy morning at Murdoch uni was like being kicked out of the crack den by your mother and told to fend for yourself.
As a place it’s an un-lovely mix of pine trees, feral scrub and boggy white sand. The ‘fairways’ are merely bush tracks and anything other than a straight drive ends up in disc hiding grass and scratchy, tangled bushes. The only open areas are rough gravel and bitumen that make you wince every time your driver skids to a stop. Add to this the second of the three mammoth cold fronts that battered Perth this week coming through as we played and it made for an epic morning.
As I walked up to registration to see the crew practicing their putting, leaning into the wind and rain I had a brief insight into this addiction because you can bet your life that none of us wanted to be anywhere else . That’s the beautiful thing about this game to me. How you can stand before a patch of un-inspiring scrub on a cold morning with a disc in your hand and you are looking over the landscape like a hunter: appreciating the slopes and the shapes of the trees, looking for the path to the basket. The whole place is turned into a playground. I loved it.
By the groans and cheers echoing through the trees as we played you could tell that an equal mix of great shots and bad misses were being had. The flukey wind sent some drives sailing off into space and left others unhindered. Putts headed straight for the basket were either dropped like they’d been smacked down with a giant hand or flung further away. A couple of players, me included, weren’t brave enough to go for 10m putts for fear the wind would steal another 3 shots and dumped the disc at the base of the basket instead. Shot of the day would have to go to Hutchy who nailed a 25-30m tomahawk put from deep in the bush on hole 2.
Only an ultimate player….Special mention too, should go to Corey for his attempt on hole 9. Playing into the teeth of the wind, with the basket hidden behind trees on the left, most of us threw a straight drive and let natural fade and the wind turn it around the corner. Corey stood on the tee and said ‘Hey I might throw a big hyzer bomb – what do you reckon?’ It was a risky shot – crazy even – so we did the only sensible thing; we egged him on. ‘Go for it Corey’ we chorused. Of course the wind got hold of that big hyzer and blew it straight back over his head. I for one wished I’d had a stop watch because I reckon it was a shoe-in for an MTA record. It was a real ‘hold my beer and watch this’ moment and I’m pretty sure Corey will never take our advice again. Dave Bandy also dropped his customary assortment of long puts – but these have become so routine for him that when quizzed about it afterwards he couldn’t remember which holes they were on.
Dave continued his excellent form with a 56 and another tournament win.Close behind were big brother Corey Bandy and Chris Finn, tying for second on 59 with Michael Canci taking third with a 61. Glen took out the advanced division, playing a blistering front nine and using his forehand to advantage to score 60 for the day, ahead of Drew on 62 and Kingsley on 64. Thanks for all the boys for setting up the course. I’m told Dave and Hutchy spent some time during the week fine tuning the layout and they did a great job. Thanks also to our sponsors Barefoot Radler beer – which passed the ultimate taste test of going down well on a cold day.
The day proved to me what great players those boys in the top four or five are and that the weather’s never too foul to play disc golf.
